About SchoolStartDates
Roughly 13,000 US school districts each publish their calendar as a PDF on a differently-organized website. This site puts the dates a family actually plans around — the first day, the last day, and every break — on one fast page per district.
Where the dates come from
Every calendar is read from the district's own published academic calendar — the page or PDF the district itself posts. The source is named and linked on every district page, along with the date we last checked it. As of August 2026, 75 districts across 23 states are tracked, starting with the largest districts in the country.
Dates are transcribed as published, then re-checked against the same source before each school year. If a district and this site ever disagree, the district is right — and the source link on its page is the fastest way to check.
What we refuse to guess
A school year is never rolled forward unmarked. If a district hasn't adopted its 2027–28 calendar yet, its page says so — "typically starts mid-August" — instead of quietly repeating last year's dates. School boards usually approve the following year's calendar between January and May, and pages are updated as calendars are adopted.
The "is there school today" line and the countdown on each district page are worked out in your browser from that district's published calendar — snow days, emergency closures, and one-off changes announced midyear won't show here. For anything that matters (flights, camps, childcare), confirm with the district.
Who runs this
SchoolStartDates is an independent reference site. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or run by any school district, and it isn't aimed at kids — it's for the parents doing the planning.
